Formally known as Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève, this venerable troupe made its U.S. debut at the Pillow in 2007 as Ballet Genève. Under the direction of Philippe Cohen, Ballet Genève regularly presents works by contemporary choreographers such as Mats Ek, Ohad Naharin, and Jiří Kylián. The full-evening work seen here in its U.S. debut marked a triumphant return for French choreographer Joëlle Bouvier, whose company L’Esquisse appeared at the Pillow in 1989 and 1990. Her unconventional look at Romeo and Juliet joins other updated versions performed at the Pillow by Ballet Maribor and Rennie Harris Puremovement. Ballet Genève also participated in the Pillow’s opening Gala in 2011, presenting a memorable single performance of Benjamin Millepied’s Closer.
