Founded in 2003, Cedar Lake specialized in acquiring and commissioning new works by emerging choreographers from throughout the world. After having first performed on Inside/Out in 2006 under the direction of Benoit-Swan Pouffer, they made their Ted Shawn Theatre debut in 2009 with a world premiere by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, returning the following year with Didy Veldman’s Frame of View. For the two years before the company’s demise in 2015, it was under the artistic direction of Alexandra Damiani, offering a wide-ranging spectrum of both American and international choreography. Norwegian choreographer Jo Stromgren‘s Necessity, Again juxtaposes the jaunty songs of Charles Aznavour with a recorded text by French post-structuralist philosopher Jacques Derrida. For those who might attempt to decode the significance of these two opposing threads, Stromgren advises, “There is nothing to understand; relax, and let your imagination roam.”
