Regarded as a key predecessor to Cuba's avant garde dance movement, DanzAbierta (translated as "open dance") was founded in 1988 by Marianela Boán. Now under the leadership of Guido Gali and Susan Pous, this ensemble of five dancers is one of Havana's most prominent companies, regularly touring widely throughout the world. Seen at the Pillow in its first U.S. engagement, the company presented a full-evening work that has been described as a love letter to Havana. Elaborate projections brought the city to life on stage, and the traditional music forms included an energetic 'Son', a typically Cuban beat.
