Now a Company-in-Residence at Connecticut College, David Dorfman Dance was founded in 1985. Dorfman is a native Chicagoan who studied with Daniel Nagrin and toured with the companies of Kei Takei and Susan Marshall. His work was first seen at the Pillow in 1990, and he has served on the Pillow’s faculty and engaged in choreographic residencies onsite. In the 1997 Pillow season, he presented Out of Season (The Athletes Project), working with local athletes from a variety of sports (including former New York Yankees pitcher Jim Bouton) to develop the movement. Dorfman conceived Prophets of Funk after seeing The Family Stone live in 2007, aspiring to remind audiences that in spite of the funk of life, there is hope. Among the dancers seen prominently here is Jacob’s Pillow Dance Award recipient Kyle Abraham.
