Liz Lerman Dance Exchange

Recorded at Jacob's Pillow:
August 17, 2000

America's foremost exponent of community-based dance, Liz Lerman was born in California in 1947 and established her company in Washington, D.C., in 1976. This cross-generational group illustrates Lerman's philosophy that dance belongs to everyone. Her monumental "Hallelujah" project unfolded over five years, incorporating a segment that utilized Jacob's Pillow both as an inspiration and a creative venue. The "fertile fields" in this work referred not only to the Berkshire soil, but also to the Pillow's cultivation of dance and dancers. The text (recited by Martha Wittman) was drawn from a diary written in 1942 by Esther Miller, the Pillow's cook.

Dance Title: Hallelujah: In Praise of Fertile Fields
