The unmistakable engine driving La vie qui bat is Steve Reich’s iconic 1971 “Drumming,” performed here live by the Ensemble of the Société de Musique Contemporaine du Québec under the direction of Walter Boudreau. It was Boudreau who originated the idea of this collaboration with choreographer Ginette Laurin, who founded O Vertigo Danse in 1984. Widely considered as one of the leading lights of Canadian contemporary dance, Laurin first brought her choreography to the Pillow in 1990 and her company returned in 2000. The work seen here was designed to unfold in a monochromatic and minimalist environment, with the dancers’ movements echoing subtle elements in the musical score.
