As a member of the Mexico City Ballet, Gisela Noriega made her Jacob’s Pillow debut in the performance seen here. On the same program, she and American Ballet Theatre’s William Carter starred in the world premiere of Manolo Vargas’s Capriccio Espanol. Noriega, who sometimes used only her first name professionally, returned to the Pillow four years later as a guest artist with Teodoro Morca. She also frequently guested with the company of Luis Rivera. In a Dance Magazine review of a 1974 Rivera performance, Zita Allen wrote, “Noriega is enthralling…She has a marvelous airy quality of movement and a dramatic subtlety…She was thorough in creating an image of refined, subdued sexuality right down to the slight, ever-so-light taps of her heels against the floor.”
