This performance by Hector LeBeau, of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe from South Dakota, was part of Jacob’s Pillow’s weeklong celebration of Indigenous dance and culture known as The Land on Which We Dance. His daughter, Shae LeBeau, also danced as part of the same performance. Raised in Meriden, Connecticut, LeBeau has Native American and Puerto Rican heritage and is fluent in English, Spanish, and Lakota (Lakȟótiyapi). He described this War Dance as a traditional custom for occasions when the Cheyenne River Sioux go to war or when they go hunting.
