Tyrenn Lodgepole of the Diné (Navajo People) is a member of the Native American dance troupe known as Indigenous Enterprise. Lodgepole and Kenneth Shirley—founder of Indigenous Enterprise—performed as part of The Land on Which We Dance, a weeklong celebration of Indigenous dance and culture at Jacob’s Pillow in 2019. The Men’s Chicken Dance (or Kitokipaaskaan in the Blackfoot language) comes from the Blackfeet and Siksika Nations of the upper Montana and lower Canada regions. The dance and regalia mimic the male prairie chicken’s flamboyant displays during mating season. Lodgepole’s traditional small feather bustle and porcupine hair roach accentuate his strutting and showy movement.
