Since its inception in 1987, the company has toured extensively throughout the world, sharing the music, movement and spectacle of its vibrant and living culture. Traditional dances from many regions are featured, including ceremonial and seasonal dances. In these Pillow debut performances, the program was shared with two Hawaiian groups, Halau Hula O Hoakalei and Ka Pa Hula Hawai’i Hula. The company was under the direction of Hanay Geiogamah and the late Barbara Schwei during this and two subsequent Pillow appearances in 1995 and 1998. Two telecasts on the PBS Great Performances series brought the company wide exposure. Seen here is an example of the earliest participation of women in the dance circle, followed by a solo war dance.
