Maria Cheng was born in Hankow, China and studied in Hong Kong before her family moved to Minnesota in the late 1950s. She studied and performed in Minneapolis with Nancy Hauser, and began presenting solo programs in the late 1970s. Her work has been seen at the Guthrie Theater and the Walker Arts Center in Minneapolis, and at New York’s Dance Theater Workshop. She was in residence at Jacob’s Pillow during both the 1984 and 1985 seasons, performing in the Ted Shawn Theatre and on Inside/Out. In 2012, she co-founded Theatre Esprit Asia, Colorado’s first Asian-American professional theatre company.
