Following Sunhwa Chung’s debut as a performer in 1998, she founded Sunhwa Chung/Ko-Ryo Dance Theater in 2001. She has presented modern and traditional Korean choreography in New York and in Washington, DC, where the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission selected her for their Choreographers’ Showcase. While Chung’s choreography reflects her background in traditional Korean dance as well as her training in ballet and modern techniques, her movement is not defined by technique alone. Through collaborations between Chung and her dancers, they develop a heightened theatricality to explore human stories without explicit narratives.
