Although the full dance from which this duet was derived is today considered lost, the “Moon” section was filmed for the classic documentary, A Dancer’s World. This has allowed contemporary viewers to experience a tantalizing portion of this work in which Graham aimed to distill the essence of the sun, moon, earth, wind, water, fire, and stars. At the time of this performance, presented only one time at the Pillow as part of a Season Opening Gala, Wendy Whelan had been a principal dancer with New York City Ballet for more than 20 years, while Lloyd Knight was a longtime soloist with the Martha Graham Dance Company.
