A consummate storyteller, Michelle N. Gibson employs both body and mind to build a bridge between the arts and academia, with practices deeply rooted in both her New Orleans upbringing and the Black church. She has degrees from Tulane and Hollins University/American Dance Festival at Duke University, and also studied in The School at Jacob’s Pillow. Her teaching and choreography encompass all genres of the African Diaspora, Contemporary Afro Modern, Afro Funk, Jazz, and her own New Orleans Second Line aesthetic. Now on the faculty of Southern Methodist University, she is also a longtime teacher at American Dance Festival. Takin’ It to the Roots began as a solo work in 2013, and was expanded into a roving site-specific event for this 2022 Pillow engagement.
