Brooklyn-based choreographer John Heginbotham hails from Anchorage, Alaska, and he first came to Jacob’s Pillow as a student in Bessie Schönberg’s Choreography Workshop in 1990. A graduate of The Juilliard School, he performed with the Mark Morris Dance Group from 1998 to 2012, and he also danced with the companies of Pam Tanowitz, Susan Marshall, and John Jasperse. He founded Dance Heginbotham in 2011 and previewed his work that year on the Inside/Out series, returning for his Doris Duke Theatre debut in 2012. Two years later, Heginbotham’s Chalk and Soot, premiered in the same season when he received the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Award and performed Just a Minute. In 2017, he premiered The Principles of Uncertainty with artist-illustrator Maira Kalman. Dance Sonata was commissioned by Jacob’s Pillow as a collaboration between Heginbotham and composer Ethan Iverson.
