Led by New York City Ballet principal dancer Daniel Duell with artistic advisement from Ballet Master-in-Chief Peter Martins, the Choreography Project premiered a number of new works at Jacob’s Pillow during the 1986 and 1987 seasons, including the dance seen here. These programs also included classics by George Balanchine and served to introduce Pillow audiences to prominent NYCB dancers including Kyra Nichols and Wendy Whelan. The work of Miriam Mahdaviani was featured on both years’ programs, attesting to her reputation as “a choreographer of intelligence and promise,” as described by Jennifer Dunning in The New York Times. These performances also marked the Pillow debut of Damian Woetzel, who was then near the beginning of a 23-year career at NYCB before assuming his current posts at the Aspen Institute, the Vail International Dance Festival, and The Juilliard School.
