Armitage Gone! Dance was launched in 2005 when Karole Armitage returned to the U.S. after fifteen years working in Europe. Once known widely as the “punk ballerina,” Armitage has the unusual distinction of performing prominently in the works of both George Balanchine and Merce Cunningham. She has also worked with a wide range of collaborators, from visual artists such as David Salle and Jeff Koons to pop icons including Madonna and Michael Jackson. More recently, she has added Broadway choreographic credits to her résumé, with Passing Strange in 2008 and the hit revival of Hair in 2009. Three Theories was inspired by Brian Greene’s best-selling book on theoretical physics, The Elegant Universe, which describes the inherent conflict between Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity and Quantum Mechanics as well as String Theory.
