This U.S. debut engagement by The Göteborg Ballet featured two United States premieres, including Alexander Ekman’s Episode 17, which was created especially for the company. The premise of the dance is that a group of people gathers regularly to explore different themes, and on this particular occasion they are considering the ideas behind Ravel’s Boléro. (The other two works on this program also dealt with Boléro in various ways.) The Göteborg Ballet is the largest contemporary dance company in the Nordic countries today, since 2007 under the direction of Johannes Öhman, who previously appeared at the Pillow as a dancer and later director of Stockholm 59° North. Alexander Ekman, born in Sweden in 1984, is in great demand throughout the dance world and currently serves as an associate choreographer for Nederlands Dans Theater.
