SOLE Defined was established in 2011 by Quynn Johnson and Ryan Johnson, and has since become known as the Washington Metro Area’s leading arts organization specializing in percussive dance. The company uses the body as an instrument to create musical expression, synthesized with integrated media, technology, and storytelling. Methodologies related to African Diasporic Percussive Dance are employed in the company’s work, specifically tap dance, body percussion, and sand dance—all infused with original music and employing audience participation. The work seen here was developed in a residency at The Kennedy Center.
