Canadian-born dancer-choreographer-director Eric Gauthier was a longtime soloist with Germany’s Stuttgart Ballet before starting to choreograph in 2005, and this soon led to the establishment of his own groundbreaking company. Founded in 2007, Gauthier Dance soon established itself as part of the German dance scene and it now tours the world extensively, though the 2015 Pillow engagement marked the first time the company had presented a full program in the U.S. Known primarily for his own original and humorous works, Gauthier also programs contemporary dances by international choreographers including Cayetano Soto, William Forsythe, Jiří Kylián, and Mauro Bigonzetti. Swan Cake was commissioned by Gauthier Dance as part of a program that illuminated different facets of the 19th century classic, Swan Lake. In this work, Shechter shows us “driven people who have no home, no place, no choice—but desires, fantasies and dreams.”
