Bryan Arias was born in Puerto Rico and moved with his family at age nine to New York City, where he received his formal dance training at La Guardia High School for the Performing Arts. While growing up, he was also exposed to many urban and social dance styles, and all of these influences may be seen in his work. He made his professional debut with Complexions Contemporary Ballet before joining Nederlands Dans Theater. He later spent four years with Crystal Pite’s Kidd Pivot before debuting the ARIAS Company in 2013. The full-evening work seen here was created in two different residencies at Jacob’s Pillow, and this particular performance occurred the day after its world premiere. In a program note, Arias states that he aims “to leave the viewer questioning their logic of identity, and thinking of the connections that define them.”
