Chosen by the Royal Danish Ballet to receive a scholarship to study at Jacob’s Pillow in 1985, Nikolaj Hübbe has more than fulfilled his early promise. Soon after returning to Denmark, he joined the corps of the Royal Danish Ballet and was promoted to the rank of principal in 1988. He joined New York City Ballet as a principal dancer in 1992 and has created roles in works by Jerome Robbins, Twyla Tharp, and many others, while also dancing lead roles in more than two dozen Balanchine ballets. Hübbe became the artistic director of the Royal Danish Ballet in 2008. Darci Kistler joined New York City Ballet as a member of the corps de ballet in 1980, was promoted to the rank of soloist in 1981, and became a principal dancer in 1982. George Balanchine himself guided her meteoric rise, and she was his last protégée, retiring from the stage in 2010.
