The extensive connections between Jacob’s Pillow and the New York City Ballet have been documented in their own playlist, but the company’s dancers are usually billed in bespoke ways. NYCB Associate Artistic Director Wendy Whelan suggested this dance as a way to celebrate Pam Tanowitz receiving the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Award at the Season Opening Gala in 2024, and Tanowitz herself can be glimpsed at the beginning of this clip. Caroline Shaw titled her composition after the central 19th-century photographer and has described it as “a multi-layered portrait of [Chopin’s] Op. 17 #4 using some of Chopin’s ingredients overlaid and hinged together with my own.”
