The closing section of an evening-length presentation entitled Buscando a Goya (or Searching for Goya), the title of this section is taken from Francisco de Goya’s painting known as “Two People Looking Into a Luminous Room.” Founded in Madrid in 1993 by artistic director Martín Santangelo and his wife, Soledad Barrio, Noche Flamenca has been recognized as one of Spain’s most successful flamenco companies. All aspects of flamenco—dance, song, and music—are given equal weight and are interrelated in Noche Flamenca, creating a true communal ambience within the company, which is the heart and soul of flamenco. This community ethos was particularly evident in 2000 when the Doris Duke Theatre was radically transformed, with a raised stage and audience members seated at small café tables.
