Artistic director, choreographer, and dancer, Akram Khan was born in London in 1974, and began performing as a child actor. As a teenager, he toured the world with the Royal Shakespeare Company in Sir Peter Brook’s landmark staging of The Mahabarata, and started his dance studies with Bengali folk dance and the North Indian classical form of Kathak. While at university, Khan was first introduced to contemporary dance and ballet. Khan attributes his understanding of how to blend Kathak and contemporary dance to a collaboration with British dancer-choreographer Jonathan Burrows. Khan makes work for his own company, performs as a soloist, and collaborates with artists such as Lin Hwai-min of Cloud Gate Dance Theatre.
