Based in Berlin, Felix Ruckert had an international dance education, studying in Essen, Paris, and New York. He began choreographing in the late 1980s and he first caused a scandal in 1992 with Cut, a highly sexual work which invited the audience to interact with the dancers. It was also that year that he joined Pina Bausch’s Wuppertaler Tanztheater where he performed for two years. He left the company to work as a nomadic choreographer, increasingly offering the audience an active role in his performances. In Deluxe Joy Pilot (which was given its U.S. premiere at the Pillow), the printed program included “Rules of the Game” which suggested three levels of participation to audience members, determined by where they chose to sit.
