Brooklyn-based choreographer John Heginbotham hails from Anchorage, Alaska, and he first came to Jacob’s Pillow as a student in Bessie Schönberg’s Choreography Workshop in 1990. A graduate of The Juilliard School, he performed with the Mark Morris Dance Group from 1998 to 2012, and he has also danced with the companies of Pam Tanowitz, Susan Marshall, and John Jasperse. He founded Dance Heginbotham in 2011 and previewed his work that year on the Inside/Out series, returning for his Doris Duke Theatre debut in 2012. Heginbotham’s work is characterized by highly structured, technically rigorous and theatrical choreography, frequently set to contemporary music as in his 2014 work, Chalk and Soot. The work seen here is a Pillow-commissioned collaboration between Heginbotham and the artist-illustrator Maira Kalman, who is seen and heard in this excerpt.
