Alexander Whitley is a London-based choreographer whose pioneering and award-winning work with digital technology has placed him at the forefront of innovation in contemporary dance. His multi-disciplinary practice, focusing on the use of motion-tracking and interactive technology, spans stage, installation, film, and immersive platforms. Whitley has created work for several of the UK’s leading companies including The Royal Ballet, Birmingham Royal Ballet, Rambert, Balletboyz, and Candoco Dance Company. The experimental performance seen here placed two dancers in different locations (one in the Doris Duke Theatre, and the other in the Ted Shawn Theatre), and united them within a shared virtual environment. Their 3D movement data was captured and streamed live into the company’s Otmo Live software, where digital avatars of the dancers meet and interact. In this clip, each of the dancers is seen on their respective stages along with the digital avatars as they were projected onto backdrops behind them.
