Lamentation: Dancing the Archive was part of the Dancing the Algorithm exhibit in the gallery of the Doris Duke Theatre, curated by Katherine Helen Fisher. Originally created for the Martha Graham Dance Company, it allowed audiences to manipulate a volumetric (3D) video of Martha Graham’s iconic 1930 solo, Lamentation, with their own gestures and movement. Lamentation is an early modernist distillation of grief through the body. The user engages with this exhibit through direct bodily interaction, fostering closeness to the original work and building bridges from past to present.
Lamentation: Dancing the Archive was developed in the Barnard Movement Lab with support from the Google Artists + Machine Intelligence (AMI) Research Awards.
