Originally launched in 1994 by Jacqulyn Buglisi and Donlin Foreman with associate founders Terese Capucilli and Christine Dakin, the company evolved out of the necessity to produce new dances, embrace young dancers, and bring audiences into the realm of dramatic dance. With a shared heritage in the Martha Graham Dance Company, the founders aimed to bridge cultural and geographical boundaries through theatrical dance, making their Pillow debut in 2001. The work seen here was inspired by the Italian Baroque painter Artemisia Gentileschi, reflecting the suppression of freedom that still surrounds many contemporary women. The company continues today as Buglisi Dance Theatre.
