Growing up in Pittsburgh, Kyle Abraham began training there at the Civic Light Opera Academy and the Creative and Performing Arts High School, studying classical cello, piano, and the visual arts as well as dance. He later earned degrees from SUNY Purchase and NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, and has performing credentials with the companies of David Dorfman, Nathan Trice, and Bill T. Jones. His own company, now known as A.I.M by Kyle Abraham, includes dancers from various disciplines and diverse personal backgrounds. He presented a signature solo, Inventing Pookie Jenkins, at the Pillow in both 2009 and 2010. In 2011, he collaborated with Camille A. Brown on a unique presentation at the Pillow billed as Kyle and Camille, and he received the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Award in 2012. Shortly after the presentation of Pavement at the Pillow in 2013, the MacArthur Foundation announced that Abraham had been chosen for one of its prestigious “Genius” grants. A.I.M returned in 2017 with Dearest Home and made its Ted Shawn Theatre debut with a varied repertory program in 2019. An Untitled Love was partly developed in a Pillow Lab residency, and it draws upon the inspiration of D’Angelo’s music to celebrate how love is experienced in various Black lives.
