British-born Aakash Odedra began studying classical Indian dance at the age of eight in his native Birmingham. He trained intensively in Bharata Natyam and Kathak before moving to Mumbai at fifteen to deepen his knowledge in both these dance forms. After returning to England in 2004, he performed in a festival organized by Akram Khan which then led to a mentoring relationship and ultimately to the program of solos presented at the Pillow. The work excerpted here was the final offering on the program, preceded by Odedra’s performances in solos created by Russell Maliphant, Akram Khan, and an opening work of his own. Half-Moroccan, half-Flemish choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui sought to highlight different patterns of sound and different sources of light that come together to form a constellation.
