Ann Carlson’s Night Light is remembered today as one of the most ambitious and unusual undertakings ever attempted at Jacob’s Pillow. Using ten vintage photographs as inspiration, Carlson and a sizable team of artistic associates created a series of tableaux vivantes around the Pillow grounds. Audiences were led by a group of narrator/guides who described the circumstances of the original images in their own words. Carlson’s intent was “to expose issues of what gets preserved, both in our memories as well as literally what is saved, conserved, and held onto as documents of historical truth.”
