Under the direction of Tom Mossbrucker and Jean-Philippe Malaty, Aspen Santa Fe Ballet made its Pillow debut in 2003 and returned in five different seasons before its final performances in 2020. The company’s eclectic repertory for these visits included works by Twyla Tharp, Moses Pendleton, William Forsythe, Alejandro Cerrudo, Nicolo Fonte, Itzik Galili, and Jiří Kylián. Initially based solely in Aspen, Colorado, the company added a second home base six hours away in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in 2000. In addition to these headquarters, Mossbrucker claimed, “We’re deeply attached to the Pillow, part of our spiritual roots.” This signature work by choreographer Gerald Arpino (1923-2008) was created for The Joffrey Ballet, Arpino’s artistic home from its founding in 1956 until shortly before his death.
