Under the direction of Tom Mossbrucker and Jean-Philippe Malaty, Aspen Santa Fe Ballet made its Pillow debut in 2003 and returned in five different seasons before its final performances in 2020. The company’s eclectic repertory for these visits included works by Twyla Tharp, William Forsythe, Gerald Arpino, Itzik Galili, Nicolo Fonte, and Jiří Kylián. Initially based solely in Aspen, Colorado, the company added a second home base six hours away in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in 2000. In addition to these two homes, Mossbrucker claims, “We’re deeply attached to the Pillow, part of our spiritual roots.” Alejandro Cerrudo’s Silent Ghost opened a Pillow program of three works created especially for ASFB.
