Under the direction of Tom Mossbrucker and Jean-Philippe Malaty, Aspen Santa Fe Ballet made its Pillow debut in 2003 and has since returned in five different seasons. The company’s eclectic repertory for these visits has included works by Twyla Tharp, William Forsythe, Itzik Galili, Alejandro Cerrudo, and Jiří Kylián. Initially based solely in Aspen, Colorado, the company added a second home base six hours away in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in 2000. In addition to these two homes, Mossbrucker claims, “We’re deeply attached to the Pillow, part of our spiritual roots.” Works by the Brooklyn-born Nicolo Fonte have long played an important role in AFSB’s repertory, and The Heart(s)pace represents his eighth commission for the company.
