Founded in 1988 by former New York City Ballet principal dancer Daniel Duell, Ballet Chicago performed in three successive Pillow seasons in its earliest years. These appearances followed two other programs that Duell organized in 1986 and 1987 with colleagues from his former company, billed as the Choreography Project with Dancers from the New York City Ballet. All of these presentations are remembered for introducing many prominent dancers and dances to Pillow audiences, including this first performance of a Peter Martins ballet at Jacob’s Pillow. Calcium Light Night heralded the very beginning of Martins’s choreographic career (created only a few months after his final Pillow appearance partnering Suzanne Farrell) and the original dancers were Heather Watts and Daniel Duell.
