Formally known as Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève, this venerable troupe made its U.S. debut at the Pillow in 2007 as Ballet Genève. Although its primary Pillow offering in 2011 was Joëlle Bouvier’s evening-length Romeo and Juliet, the company also presented a memorable single performance of this Benjamin Millepied duet as part of the season opening Gala. Under the direction of Philippe Cohen, Ballet Genève regularly presents works by contemporary choreographers such as Mats Ek, Ohad Naharin, and Jiří Kylián. Closer was originally danced by Gillian Murphy and Millepied himself as part of his own company’s appearances at New York’s Joyce Theater. Formerly a principal dancer with New York City Ballet, Millepied achieved more mainstream notoriety in 2010 as choreographer of the hit film Black Swan.
