Founded in 1926 by Marie Rambert (1888-1982), Ballet Rambert continues today as Britain’s oldest dance company, now known as Rambert Dance Company. Some of its early productions in the 1920s and 1930s were created by pioneering choreographers such as Frederick Ashton and Antony Tudor, and the company included two Tudor works when it made its U.S. debut at Jacob’s Pillow in 1959. Tudor had a particularly close relationship to the Pillow throughout the 1940s and 50s, and his work had also been part of The National Ballet of Canada‘s U.S. debut at the Pillow. Ballet Rambert’s landmark engagement comprised an extraordinary three-week season of eight ballets, including two full-evening productions.
