Better known by his B-boy moniker, Crutchmaster, Bill Shannon has pursued a performance career that defies all categories. He was born with a degenerative hip condition and began using crutches at the age of five, but his passion for art and dance overshadowed his disability. Based in Pittsburgh, he received a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and first burst upon the New York dance scene in the 1990s. His works focused on translating street dance into the proscenium have been presented at prominent venues in New York City and throughout the world. He first worked with Jacob’s Pillow in 2022, when the Pillow collaborated with the global video channel NOWNESS to produce Body Language–a series of three films centered on the theme of breaking cultural boundaries in dance.
