Under the artistic direction of Hope Muir from 2017 through 2021, Charlotte Ballet began its life as North Carolina Dance Theatre in 1970, making its Pillow debut that same year. The company moved from Winston-Salem to Charlotte in 1990 and changed its name in 2014, achieving some of its greatest successes under the longtime direction of former New York City Ballet stars Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux and Patricia McBride. Choreographer Bryan Arias began his performing career with Charlotte Ballet, and brought his ARIAS Company to the Pillow in 2016. When Breath Becomes Air is a work for 11 dancers that Arias created especially for the dancers of the Charlotte Ballet as part of Hope Muir’s inaugural season.
