The fourteen men of Che Malambo are far from typical performers, many earning their living in Argentina as construction workers, plumbers, drivers, and school teachers. They are all united by their love of Malambo, a traditional dance form handed down from South American cowboys. Roots for this genre are found in West African dance, Irish step dance, tango, and flamenco. The mastermind behind putting these traditional dances on the concert stage is Gilles Brinas, a classically-trained French dancer and choreographer whose professional credits include the Lyon Opera Ballet and Maurice Béjart’s Ballet of the Twentieth Century.
