Led by New York City Ballet principal dancer Daniel Duell with artistic advisement from Ballet Master-in-Chief Peter Martins, the Choreography Project premiered a number of new works at Jacob’s Pillow during the 1986 and 1987 seasons, including the dance seen here. These programs also included classics by George Balanchine and served to introduce Pillow audiences to prominent NYCB dancers including Kyra Nichols and Wendy Whelan. Works by Bart Cook were featured on both years’ programs, as befitting his position as an assistant ballet master at NYCB who was first encouraged to choreograph by Balanchine himself. These performances also marked the only Pillow appearances of Albert Evans, a trailblazing NYCB principal who died in 2015 at age 46.
