Based in Melbourne, Australia, Chunky Move was founded in 1995 by Gideon Obarzanek, who had trained at the Australian Ballet School and danced with Queensland Ballet and the Sydney Dance Company. He devised the name because “chunky” described the kind of work his dancers were known for in the beginning, while starting a company was a big move, and so Chunky Move was born. The company has performed in prominent cities and festivals throughout the world and has received prestigious awards for its innovative works. Tense Dave was presented on a turntable that revolves throughout the performance, providing a constantly-shifting perspective for the audience. It was created in partnership with Lucy Guerin, whose own company performed at the Pillow in 2010.
