Based in Brisbane, Australia, Circa has toured to 22 countries since its founding in 2006. The company’s repertory combines contemporary circus with acrobatic dance and multi-media elements. Their 2012 presentation of the eponymous Circa and the 2014 performances of S utilized little or no set, characters, story line, or theme, and the entire production was on an intensely human scale. Only the barest of costumes are usually employed, along with basic lights and circus equipment. The company’s artistic director, Yaron Lifschitz, has said that “circus and classical music seem to work really well together because there’s a kind of mutual respect for each other’s virtuosity, but its so different.”
