CoisCéim’s name comes from the Irish word for footstep and is pronounced “Kush Came.” Since its founding in 1995, the company has presented original works to audiences large and small, onstage, on film, and off site throughout Ireland and overseas, making its U.S. debut with this engagement. Co-founder, director, and choreographer David Bolger has created many works for CoisCéim while also working independently in opera, theater, and film. Ballads explores a defining moment in the psyche of the Irish people, grappling with the great Irish Famine of 1845. Using the genre of dance to transcend the spoken word, this work attempts to capture the emotions of the real people who were victims of this natural calamity.
