With rotating casts of virtuoso hip-hop dancers, mainly of Algerian and North African descent, Compagnie Käfig strives to bring people together and erase their differences. The company’s name is derived from the Algerian word for cage. Director Mourad Merzouki is based in the French city of Lyon, where the company enjoyed much of its early success beginning in 1996. The title Dix Versions is a play on words, which may be interpreted as “diversions” or simply the ten sections of this work, formatted to allow the ten dancers to display individual specialties. The performance seen here was the U.S. premiere of Dix Versions. In 2012 and 2013, the company returned with an all-Brazilian group of dancers in two works, Correria and AGWA.
