Brian Schaefer

Brian Schaefer is a New York-based writer whose work has appeared in The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Out Magazine, Dance Magazine and Israel’s Haaretz newspaper, among others.

He has been a scholar-in-residence at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival since 2015. In 2012, while living in Tel Aviv, he was a Finalist for the 2012 Livingston Award for Young Journalists in International Reporting for his exploration of the history and politics of Israel’s LGBT community. Since moving to New York in 2013, he has co-written the weekly Dance Listings for The New York Times. In 2007, Brian received a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in Arts Journalism for Dance Criticism, and from 2011-2014, he was a Board Member of the Dance Critics Association. Brian holds Bachelor degrees in Communication and Dance from the University of California, San Diego and a Masters degree in Literature and Creative Writing from Bar Ilan University in Israel.
