Established in 1984 by artistic directors/choreographers Sabine Dahrendorf and Alfonso Ordóñez Maray, Danat Danza is based in Barcelona. Seen here in its U.S. debut, the company had already made a name for itself in the vanguard of the Spanish dance scene. The title of this work is translated as “The sky is paved with bricks” and the inspiration was Goya’s fantastical “Los Caprichos,” a series of 18th-century engravings depicting the struggle between reason and fantasy. In a review of this performance in The New York Times, Anna Kisselgoff wrote that El cielo “mixes echoes of the past and a tempo of the present with dynamic originality.”
