Established in Tel Aviv in 1964, Batsheva took its name from its founder, Baroness Batsheva (Bethsabee) de Rothschild, a member of the prominent banking family. Martha Graham was the company’s first artistic director, and Israeli-born choreographer Ohad Naharin took over in 1990. The company made its first Pillow appearance in 1995 and returned in 2004. Naharin and the company have had a wide influence, spawning choreographers such as Barak Marshall, Hofesh Shechter, and Sharon Eyal. Deca Dance is an anthology of many earlier works by Naharin including Zachacha, and features an audience participation section that has also been performed here by Hubbard Street Dance Chicago.
